The voice of a nation, under siege.
Tewodros Kassahun has carried Ethiopia's hopes and griefs for two decades. In April 2026, a single album shifted the political ground.
On April 16, 2026, Teddy Afro released Etorika — eighteen tracks, ninety-six minutes, direct to YouTube. No label. No gatekeepers. 87 million views in one week.
The Ethiopian government's response was swift. His studio was raided by federal police — no warrant, guards beaten, equipment seized. His spokesperson Mahlet Solomon was arrested from a hotel. His close friend Yusuf Yasin was detained. Neither has appeared in court.
Over 100 Ethiopian youth have been arrested simply for listening to his music. The song Das Tal — viewed over 7 million times — has been linked by authorities to “incitement” ahead of the June 2026 general election.
“Arresting Mahlet Solomon won't delete those 87 million streams. Ransacking a studio won't erase what people already feel.”
